Winery at Holy Cross Abbey's Spring Fling to showcase three new wines

With three new wines and several appetizers, the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey will host its 12th annual Spring Fling from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday on the winery grounds at 3011 East U.S.

21/04/2017

The celebration will showcase the release of three new wines: 2016 Viognier, 2015 Colorado Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2015 Colorado Cabernet Franc.

The Viognier (vee-own-yay) is a brand new varietal wine for the Abbey brand. It is often referred to by Napa Valley vintners as "the grape that will break your heart." Nevertheless, Colorado Vineyard Specialists in Palisade took the plunge, and the vintage 2016 will be the showcase wine at Spring Fling. A full-bodied white wine that originated in southern France, most noted for its perfumed aromas of peach, tangerine, and honeysuckle, the wine is typically dry, with an oily sensation in the middle of the tongue.

Each wine will be paired with fruits, cheeses, desserts and assorted appetizers that will best compliment the tasting experience. A special one-time pricing will be available on the wines, and winemaker Jeff Stultz will hold barrel tastings in the winery. Gary Meyer's group Dirty Flamenco will provide entertainment.

With music, wine, and marriage vow renewals, Florence's third annual Escape in Time to Steampunk and Wine festival will be Saturday and Sunday in Pioneer Park.

The park, located on Pikes Peak Avenue and Third Street, will be taken over by vendors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. On Saturday, the event will end with a Steampunk Ball from 7 to 11 p.m.

During the day, most of the entertainment will be at the covered pavilion. Returning from last year will be The Midnight Sun, who will play at the Steampunk Ball. Other performers are the Frost Mountain Clan, Bobby Dean, the Bent Fork Family Band and the Sons of the Republic.

Additionally, Gold Canyon Gunfighters will set up their "Old West Town" in the park, where they will perform gunfights throughout the two days.

On top of that, they will stay true to this year's theme, "Steamy Love," by performing a "shot gun" wedding for couples interested in renewing their marriage vows.
