Whitebarrel Winery in Christiansburg is expanding into Blacksburg, opening a wine and tapas bar later this year.

The company announced last week that its owners are planning to put the new bar downtown in The Brownstone building at 301 S. Main St. The 1,600-square-foot space will feature Whitebarrel's wines along with other wines, ciders and meads from across Virginia, according to a news release from Whitebarrel. It also will have a tapas bar with Virginia produce and cheeses and a rotating menu to introduce local foods designed to complement the wines available.

The release said Whitebarrel plans to offer a wide selection of wines from each of Virginia's distinctive wine-growing regions. Wine will be sold by the glass and bottle on-site.

"The Virginia wine industry has matured to a point where we can proudly offer wine, cider and mead from dozens of wineries around the Commonwealth of Virginia, including our own," said co-owner Richard Obiso.

Whitebarrel was previously known as Attimo Winery, before it re-branded in 2015. It was formed in the late 2000s and the winery was open to the public in 2011, according to its website. It now has more than 17 acres of property and vineyards in Montgomery County and more than 33 acres in Floyd County, producing several thousand cases of wine each year. The company said more than 50,000 people visit Whitebarrel annually to taste the wine and eat from its full-service menu.
