Wooden Casks

European Roots, South African Soul

Founded in 2021 by Belgian couple Frederik and Céline Hasher, the estate is more than just a winemaking venture—it’s the embodiment of a personal and generational dream. This family-owned and operated estate also benefits from the experience and support of Céline’s uncle, Xavier Haspeslagh, and his wife, Christine Bouckaert—both of whom contribute to shaping the estate’s values and direction. Together with a tight-knit team, they bring a shared passion for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines with long-term legacy in mind.

Vineyard-First Philosophy

At Hasher Family Wines, everything begins in the vineyard. Situated in a cool, maritime-influenced corner of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the estate has grown with a clear focus on quality over quantity, selecting varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are perfectly suited to the climate.
The team has embraced regenerative farming practices that respect the natural ecosystem:

  • Permanent cover crops for soil health
  • Organic fertilisers and composting
  • Biodiversity-enhancing methods like introducing endemic predator insects to control pests
  • Innovative pruning techniques that promote vine balance and longevity

Conservation isn’t a marketing line—it’s a mission. The estate is a proud member of the WWF Conservation Champion programme, safeguarding 14 identified species of conservation concern that reside on the property.
From protecting local flora and fauna to adopting earth-conscious practices in the vineyard and cellar, Hasher Family Wines is building more than a brand—it’s stewarding a legacy for future generations.

Minimal Intervention, Maximum Expression

Hasher Family Wines believes that exceptional wines begin with exceptional fruit. In the cellar, this philosophy translates into a minimalist, terroir-focused approach. The wines are crafted to highlight the natural character of the valley—layered, elegant, and deeply connected to the rhythms of the land. Each vintage is shaped not by formula, but by the seasonal patterns and biodiversity that define the region.

Nauticus Sauvignon Blanc

2024

Nauticus Sauvignon Blanc

For centuries, the stormy seas along our coastline scared sailors. Today they give our Sauvignon Blanc its crisp character.

  • 2024 – 91 Points by James Suckling
WINEMAKER’S NOTE

The Nauticus Sauvignon blanc is made to express the essence of the Cape South Coast wine region. The Cape South Coast’s distinctive cool maritime influence and long growing season is exemplified in the selected vineyards because of their elevation, soil texture and exposure to the ocean breeze.

The Nauticus Sauvignon blanc is a symphony composed of different vineyard sites and winemaking components. The early pick retains natural acidity and freshness. 15% of the wine was aged in barrel which offers complexity and texture to the core. Additionally, 15% was fermented in a concrete egg vessel which accentuate the mineral notes on the palate as well as the nose. The influence of the cool ocean breeze and summer sun promotes a beautiful balance of citrus and white fruit, with a delicious lingering salty finish.

GROWING SEASON NOTE

After a relatively warm winter, which lead to an early bud break, the spring months were exceptionally dry. With the spring storms staying away, there was no wind to disturb the flowers and the superb berry setting gave us high hopes for an easy season with high yields. However, nature threw use a curve ball in the middle of harvest with lots of rain in February and March. We had almost 230 mm of rain in these two months, which is 2,5 times the average. Picking decisions were thus based both on phenolic ripeness and weather forecast. Early pickings allowed lower alcohol wines complemented with exquisite natural acidity.

TASTING NOTE

The Cyriel Cabernet Franc 2023 shows a bright ruby appearance. Its aromatic profile opens with elegant floral notes of violet and Damask rose. These mingle with vibrant red cherry, cassis and raspberry fruits. A distinctive wet gravel minerality adds complexity, alongside subtle aniseed and liquorice spice. The palate mirrors these floral characteristics, harmoniously intertwined with red berry fruits. Silky tannins provide structure and balance. The wine offers a perfect equilibrium of freshness and weight. It culminates in a long, fruit-forward finish that showcases the vintage's remarkable purity and balanced vibrancy.
