Old Charter Oak Canadian Oak is made using the same mash bill used to produce Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare Bourbons. It was then matured in barrels made from Canadian oak, which is said to have a tighter grain structure than American oak.

Harlen Wheatley, the master distiller, said: “The tighter grain allows the whiskey to penetrate more layers in the wood, but it does take it longer to do it. So the longer the Bourbon ages, the more flavour can be extracted.”

Aged for 10 years, Old Charter Oak Canadian Oak is said to have aromas of caramel and berries. On the palate, it has hints of vanilla and maple syrup while there is a long finish of oak, chocolate, and pepper.

Kris Comstock, senior marketing director, said: “We’re excited to release this third Bourbon in this exploratory series. We have Bourbon ageing for the Old Charter Oak collection scheduled for release now through 2030, but we’ll keep producing more each year for more new whiskeys beyond that.”

Bottled at 46% ABV, the suggested retail price for Canadian Oak is US$69.99. Each bottle will feature an oak medallion on the front depicting the Charter Oaktree.

This is the third expression in the Old Charter Oak Collection. The first two releases were aged in Mongolian oak and French oak, with a fourth release scheduled for early 2020.
