Rogue Spirits Shares Distillery History

Rogue began distilling in 2003 and later opened Oregon’s first rum distillery

Newport, Ore.— Rogue Ales & Spirits is proud to share with you its distillery and barrel-making story along with its 10 craft distilled spirits.
As part of the Do-It-Yourself revolution, Rogue began distilling in 2003 and later opened Oregon’s first rum distillery, originally located on the second floor of the Rogue Public House in NW Portland. As the demand for craft spirits rose, Rogue moved the distilling operation from Portland to Newport, located on the Oregon Coast. The distillery and now brand new cooperage, Rolling Thunder Barrel Works, are across the parking lot from Rogue Brewery, where the whiskey wash is also brewed.

As the revolution grew, Rogue began growing its own ingredients in 2008 and established two farms; one in Oregon\'s Willamette Valley and one in Tygh Valley, located in the rain shadow of Mt. Hood. Rogue grows over two dozen ingredients including barley, rye, hazelnuts, jalapeños, cucumbers and botanicals – and uses its own ingredients in its spirits.

The quest for defying the status quo never ends. This year, Rogue took its ground-to-glass philosophy to the next logical step and opened Rolling Thunder Barrel Works, becoming the only craft distillery – and brewery – to make its own barrels. Coopering is a time-honored tradition and a highly skilled craft that fits perfectly with the Do-It-Yourself philosophy.
Rogue’s spirits have won over 160 awards for taste and quality and are distributed in 45 states and five countries. Rogue pushes the boundaries without the use of chemicals, additives, or preservatives. For more information, visit rogue.com and the Rogue Spirits blog.
