Jackson Family Wines purchases Alexander Valley’s Field Stone Winery
Following a string of acquisitions of small, boutique wineries, Jackson Family Wines has quietly purchased Field Stone Winery, in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley.
Following a string of acquisitions of small, boutique wineries, Jackson Family Wines has quietly purchased Field Stone Winery, in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. Best known for its old-vine Petite Sirah, the Field Stone vineyard was first planted in 1894.
Like many wineries and vineyards of that era, it fell into neglect during Prohibition. Wallace Johnson, a onetime mayor of Berkeley who was instrumental in establishing the BART system, revived the 27-acre property in the 1960s. When Johnson died from a stroke in 1979, his daughter and son-in-law Katrina and John Staten took over winery operations.
Today, the winery is a well-regarded producer not only of Petite Sirah but also of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier and Syrah. Its tasting room, on Highway 128 between Calistoga and Healdsburg, is a popular destination.
