Wine lovers are clearly toasting ¡Salud! in Nordic countries, where Spain in particular has something special to celebrate. According to recent data, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland officially imported more sparkling wine from Spain than from France in the first nine months of 2014. This makes Spanish sparkling wine the second most imported in its category among the leading Nordic countries, trailing behind Italy at this time.

According to the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OEMV), from January to September 2013, imports of sparkling wine amounted to 4.48 million liters from Spain, 5.54 million from Italy, and 5.77 million from France. In the same period of 2014, France brought up to rear, with 5.71, slightly lagging behind Spain, with 5.76, and with Italy leading the way, with 7.59 million liters.

Sales of Spanish sparkling wines increased by 28.4% between the two periods, while sales of French wines slipped by 1.1% and Italy—which performed especially well—gained notable market share. It’s also worth noting that Sweden, Norway and Finland all increased their wine imports in the period, in terms of both value and volume.
