One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman’s Roller IPA has been named best beer by 2020 London Beer Competition.

20/07/2020

London Beer Competition announces Truman’s Roller IPA as the best beer for its  2020 London Beer Competition. The beer got the top score for quality, value and package and makes it the 2020 Beer Of The Year.

Brewed with the finest hops from the US and Australia. Huge aromas of citrus and stone fruits. A piney underfloor, dark malt body and a bitter-sweet grapefruit finish.

One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman's has been a part of London life for almost 350 years. Closed in 1989 during dark days for the brewing industry, we have been working hard to bring Truman's back to its former glory.

About Truman’s.

About Truman’s

The Truman’s story is a tale of rise, fall and renewal. The rise lasted for over two hundred and fifty years and was based on great beer, great pubs and respect for the local community. The fall took just under two decades and turned all of this on its head.

Truman’s was founded in 1666 when Brick Lane was just a track flanked by fields. The brewery grew as East London grew and then beyond. For a brief time in the 1800s it was the biggest brewery in the world - it sent Imperial Stout to the Russian court and IPA to the British Raj. It remained resolutely independent until succumbing to the merger mania of the 1980s. In 1989 the brewery and pubs were sold and Truman’s sadly closed its doors.

Thankfully, the name remained. Truman’s is still seen on many local pub walls and the old brewery has become East London’s creative heart. In 2010, Truman’s was re-established by two local beer enthusiasts, James Morgan and Michael-George Hemus.

They based the come back on the principals that made Truman’s great, starting with making great beer once again and having a profound respect for pubs and pub culture.

This renewal was made complete with the opening of the Eyrie, the new Truman’s brewery in Hackney Wick, in the summer of 2013. It may not be anyway near the size of the Brick Lane site, but we hope it will be just as loved.

London Beer Competition

The London Beer Competition (LBC) is a beer competition with a bit of a difference. Back for a third time after the huge success of its second year, beers entered at LBC are judged and rewarded for obviously their quality and taste, but also value for money and packaging design to reflect how most of us pick and choose a beer we’ve never tried before.

Ros Shiel, Secretary of the British Guild of Beer Writers and 2019 London Beer Competition judge said, “I think that competitions have probably become more important as the market has grown because as a consumer, if you’re confronted with a very busy beer aisle or a bar with dozens of pub clips, how can you, unless you know the market, unless you know what brands are already like … how can you make a choice? So actually, having a beer with a medal win on the label or on the pub clip gives you some kind of reassurance that a mark of quality, that other people, that experts have tasted this beer and found it to be an award-winning beer. And I think for an initiated beer drinker that can be pretty reassuring.”

It’s a pretty nifty idea! With the huge expansion of the beer scene, breweries need to stand out more and more on the shelves of pubs and shops, and the quality should be reflected in the price. And the London Beer Competition is all about picking out and rewarding those breweries and their products that we actually want to buy; rather than just judging a beer on its taste, they’re judging which breweries give the whole package and are able to show off their hard brewing work with their commercial smarts because this is what the best breweries do every day.

And medal-winners are chosen for a variety of reasons; whether they offer the best value for their price, the best quality for their price, they stand out on shelves against competitors, or tell a story in the most relevant way.

About the London Beer Competition

The London Beer Competition looks to recognize, reward and help promote beer brands that have successfully been created to identify with and target a specific beer drinker. For any beer brand to earn its place on a retailer’s shelf or a restaurant’s beer list -  and then vitally stay there - they need to be marketable and consumer-driven and not just produced in the general hope it can find enough people willing to sell and buy it.

That is why the London Beer Competition is different. It will single out and shine the spotlight on those beer brands that consumers really want to buy and have a clear market value for trade buyers.
