Cincinnati craft brewery Christian Moerlein is digging into its rich German history by collaborating with Bavarian brewery Maisel & Friends, creating two exciting new beers with the first to launch in late July.
Christian Moerlein and Maisel & Friends are both pioneer brands of today’s craft beer movement. Christian Moerlein himself was a Bavarian immigrant who came to Cincinnati and established his brewery in 1853. The original Moerlein Brewery ceased operation in 1919 at the start of prohibition. In 1981, Christian Moerlein was brought back as one of the first craft beers sold commercially east of the Mississippi River and is the first American beer to pass the German Purity Law of 1516 known as the Reinheitsgebot, which states beer can be made only with hops, malt, yeast and water.
The Maisel Brewery was founded in 1887 and Jeff Maisel runs the family company now in its fourth generation. Maisel is most famous in Germany and abroad for its Bavarian wheat beer specialties and Jeff Maisel was one of the first German brewers founding a craft beer brand with Maisel & Friends. Exceptionally creative and skilled, the brewers at Maisel impressively demonstrate what is possible to brew with just four basic ingredients: hops, malt, yeast and water. All beers are brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot.
On June 21, the Maisel & Friends brewmaster Marc Goebel and beer sommelier Michael Koenig will travel to Cincinnati to brew the first collaborative beer of the series, Spacetime. Spacetime will be a Hoppy Wheat Ale with a unique hop-forward twist to traditional German Weiss Beer. It uses German malts and American varietal hops that give a pineapple, pine, citrus and tropical aromas that are more kin to American IPA’s.
“We are excited to brew with Maisel & Friends and to offer these truly unique brews commemorating our German-American friendship and cultural connection,” said Greg Hardman, owner of Christian Moerlein Brewing Co..
Moerlein Spacetime will be available in limited quantities of 4-pack 16 oz. cans and draft beginning in late July. The name Spacetime comes from a mathematical model that combines space and time into a single interwoven continuum. The interwoven continuum legacy of Cincinnati Beer Baron Christian Moerlein is celebrated from 19th century beginning as a brewer in Germany to this 21st century craft collaboration brew from the Brewing Teams of Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio USA and Maisel & Friends of Bayreuth, Bavaria, Germany.
