A local winery took home top awards at the Big Spring Crush Wine Festival in Huntsville on Sept. 16.

Perdido Vineyards of Perdido was awarded the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup and Alabama Wine of the Year for winemaker Jim Eddins’ port-style wine “Bodega Mauvilla,” according to a press release.

Perdido Vineyards also won best specialty wine.

The third annual Alabama Commercial Wine Competition was held on July 22, at 1892 East Restaurant in Huntsville with 52 wines, ciders, and meads entered by 16 wineries and breweries across the state. A total of 24 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and seven bronze medals were awarded by the nine wine judges who made up the three judging panels.

The top award-winning wineries were invited to pour their gold medal wines in the Alabama Wine tent at the fourth annual Big Spring Crush wine festival and five wineries were able to attend. Steve Young, director and founder of Alabama Wine, Inc., the non-profit organization that runs the Alabama Commercial Wine Festival, said the mission of Alabama Wine Inc. is “to promote Alabama wines.” He was pleased with the number of festival attendees enjoying the Alabama wines, noting the crowds surrounding the Alabama Wine tent.
