Consumption of wine rises 12 % in Nashik

Consumption of wine in Nashik district has increased by 12.20% in 2016-17 as compared to the previous financial year.

Consumption of wine in Nashik district has increased by 12.20% in 2016-17 as compared to the previous financial year.

According to the excise department figures, a total of 175.88 lakh litre of wine was consumed in Nashik district in 2016-17. However, the consumption in 2015-16 stood at 165.24 lakh litre.

The wine sale in the district was 5.88 lakh litre during 2016-17, as against 5.24 lakh litres during 2015-16. Speaking to TOI, an official from excise department said wine consumption in Nashik district is witnessing a steady growth.

"Awareness pertaining to wine is increasing among people. The wineries have been taking promotional activities for the past few years to promote sale. Moreover, there is also rise in number of wine tourists coming to the city. Wineries have also provided tasting facilities," the excise department official said.

Jagdish Holkar, chairman, wine advisory committee of MTDC and member of All India Wine Producers Association (AIWPA), said Nashik's tourism is developing due to wineries located in the district.
