Spirit Master: Mozart Dark Chocolate

Christmas is the season for indulging and what better way to do so than with a top-tasting liqueur described as being “like a chocolate sauce for grown-ups”.

12/12/2019

Every week, SB celebrates some of the top-scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competition. With Christmas and New Year’s Eve fast approaching, we thought what better way to toast the occasion than with a rich, flavoursome liqueur.

During The Liqueur Masters 2019, which was held in October at an Indian restaurant and bar 1947 London, a team of tasters assessed the breadth of the category and awarded eight Master medals to entrants.

The Chocolate round saw a Master medal go to Austria’s Mozart Distillerie for its Mozart Dark Chocolate, which was praised for its “delicious and nostalgic deep cocoa flavour”.

The chocolate liqueur contains cocoa macerate, vanilla macerate, caramel, and sugar beet distillate. The cocoa used for Mozart Dark Chocolate is a mixture of forastero and trinitario beans from West Africa.

The different cocoas and the Bourbon vanilla are macerated in the middle cut of beet sugar distillate. Part of the cocoa macerate used is stored for two years in wooden barrels.

Mozart Distillerie recommends serving the liqueur in a Chocolate Martini, Chocolate Caipirovska or Chocolate Gimlet – or as an accompaniment with desserts.

To make the Chocolate Martini at home, check out the recipe below:
