The New Zealand company behind black gin is now branching out into vodka it says “tastes like pavlova”.

Scapegrace, founded by brothers-in-law Daniel McLaughlin and Mark Neal, has produced gin since 2012. Scapegrace gin is now the fifth-highest selling gin in New Zealand.

But the pair said the time was right to move into categories and vodka, as another white spirit, was a good place to do it. Covid-19 had made them reassess their plans but instead of retracting they decided to fast-track and branch out.

Scapegrace’s spirits are made at a distillery in Canterbury, using a 19th century copper pot still.
