Eco-Certified Wines Taste Better Than Other Wines, Says Researchers

Between 1998 and 2009 the number of California eco-certified wineries increased from ten to only fifty-seven.

Based on the premise that so-called “eco-labeling” is part of, “a tool to induce environmentally friendly behavior by both firms and consumers,” researchers Magali A. Delmas, Olivier Gergaud and Jinghui Lim, the University of California, Los Angeles, in conjunction with the KEDGE Business School of Bordeaux, France studied whether or not organic and biodynamic wine tastes better than wine that does not sport an eco-label.

According to the researchers, even though eco-certified wines command higher prices, two-thirds of certified wine producers forgo applying an eco-label to their wines in part because there is no consensus in the wine industry whether eco-certified wines are of better quality than any other wines and because, according to the researchers, “An important concern among consumers is that eco-labeled products present a trade-off between product quality and environmental impact."

If the consumer sentiment they cite is true, I would love to know what planted the lack-in-quality  idea into our heads, but the study does not much delve into that question.

After surveying owners and managers of eco-certified California wineries, the researchers came to a hypothetical conclusion that eco-certified wines are of higher quality; then, they moved to wine critics, which they arguably refer to as wine experts.
