Blue wine is coming to bars in Britain

Drinkers bored of only being able to choose from red, white and rose wine rejoice: a new brightly-coloured beverage is about to hit our shelves

21/06/2016

"No one asked for it, but sure, we'll take it," says Mashable. "Blue wine is now a thing." The electric blue tipple is the brainchild of a group of Spanish entrepreneurs who launched the brand Gik, despite having no wine-making experience between them.

The drink, which is best served chilled, is a secret mixture of red and white grapes. It gets its colour from a pigment called anthocyanin, found in grape skin, as well as indigo, a natural dye. "Suggested pairings with the sweet blue wine include sushi, nachos with guacamole, pasta carbonara, and smoked salmon, in addition to music by James Blake, Alt J, and Minus the Bear," says Eater.

The wine-makers say the drink is targeted primarily at younger drinkers who may feel alienated by traditional wine culture.
