The upcoming fight between boxing champion Floyd Mayweather and MMA champion Conor McGregor on August 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is shaping up to be one of the most-watched fights in recent memory. With so many people expected to tune in to the fight via pay-per-view (PPV), Corona Extra has thrown its brand into the ring as the official beer sponsor of the Mayweather-McGregor fight.

Corona Extra has long been a brand associated with the sport of boxing, so the decision to sponsor the four-fight Showtime PPV event was an easy one to make. Fans tuning in to watch one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history will see Corona’s integration in and around the ring, prominently featured on the center of the mat, on the pay-per-view telecast and as part of the lead up during the official weigh-in.

This once-in-a-lifetime event brings together the worlds of boxing and MMA and has captured the imagination of sports fans throughout the globe from the initial announcement to the world tour and now leading up to fight night. As a result of the sponsorship, boxing fans from around the U.S. will have even more reasons to associate Corona Extra with the very best in championship boxing and sports entertainment.

“Corona Extra is thrilled to be a part of this historic match-up,” said John Alvarado, Vice President, Brand Marketing – Corona Extra. “We’re the No. 1 brand associated with boxing and our consumers have such a passion for the sport. We’ll be tuned in on the 26th with the rest of the world to catch all the action.”

What makes the sponsorship potentially so valuable for Corona Extra is all the advance hype and buzz surrounding the fight. While most boxing experts expect a quick win for Mayweather, most of the public betting action in Las Vegas has been on McGregor. Within some circles, there is now thought that McGregor might have a chance to win if he is able to score a very quick knockout. It’s easy to see how the nature of this boxing match - pitting a boxer against an MMA champion - has captured the imagination of fans everywhere.

As part of Corona’s on-going boxing marketing efforts, earlier this month Corona released its fourth annual limited-edition boxing themed bottles featuring four boxing legends and two current boxers. The bottles are available in select markets through October 1 while supplies last.

And, of course, during the remainder of the summer, Corona Extra will continue to associate its brand with the laidback, carefree beach style. Corona has been helping consumers “Find their Beach” in the U.S. since 1981. Corona Extra is exclusively brewed, imported and marketed by Constellation Brands for the U.S. market. Corona is now the #1 imported beer in the U.S. and the #5 beer brand overall.

2016 was a record-breaking sales year for Corona Extra, and further sponsorships like the one for the Mayweather-McGregor fight could help the popular brand extend its reach even further among U.S. beer drinkers.
