The Winery

Mallee Estate is a family owned and run winery. It is situated on Renmark Avenue, Renmark and was established in 1998 on a 6 acre vineyard of Shiraz.

In 1998 the first crush was 30 tonnes of Shiraz fruit and produced 2,300 cases of wine. The vintages have been steadily increasing since that first year and now the crush reaches over 450 tonnes.All processes in the winery are done under the watchful eye of the winemakers to preserve the quality of the fruit through to the bottle. State of the art processing equipment is used in the winery from the destemmer/crusher to the tank press, to the temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and cellar. The winery can crush 20 tonnes of fruit per hour therefore oxidation is minimised and quality is maximised.

Region

Renmark was founded along the banks of the River Murray and in 1889 was the first irrigation district to be established in Australia by the Canadian Chaffey brothers, George and William. Renmark is part of the Riverland, which is a large Australian wine region. The Riverland has a continental climate with temperature average from 16 degrees C in winter to 30 Degrees C in summer. The growing season is long and dry with minimal disease pressure. The land is flat with red-brown sandy loam soil.

Our Vineyard

Our vineyards were established and developed by our family company, which consists of three vineyards at separate locations in Renmark. This is to take advantage of the different soil types and to grow better and more distinctive grapes for winemaking.

Peter Markeas established the first vineyard in 1969, with 3 acres of Shiraz planted, which is used to make the Mallee Estate Shiraz. Today the vineyards consist of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvedre, Riesling and Chardonnay.

All wines are made from estate grown grapes therefore we ensure full quality control and traceability throughout the entire growing season. All our vineyards are HACCP certified through SGS International.We utilise cover crop methods to maintain soil moisture and build up organic matter in the soil. This allows a healthy environment for microorganisms to compost the organic matter, therefore reducing the need for industrial fertilisers.

Bottle Shot

Shiraz

Hand crafted from vines planted in 1970 at the Markeas family vineyards, which are surrounded by Mallee country. Yields have been kept low to ensure intense flavour in the berries and to express the fine terroir, which has stood the test of time.The nose has hints of vanilla and chocolate and the palate shows full fruit flavour, subtle French oak and develops to a warm, soft finish. This is a medium-bodied wine that is excellent drinking now.

Carbernet Sauvignon

Hand crafted from the Markeas family vineyards, which are surrounded by Mallee country. The yields have been kept low through careful pruning and management to ensure the terrior is fully expressed. The intense colour is the beginning of the complexity, as the nose has hints of vanilla and spice. The full flavoured palate offers herbaceous and black current characters, which are balanced with 12 months of American Oak maturation. The fine grain tannins lead to a long-soft finish to be remembered. This is a full-bodied wine that is great drinking now or can be cellared for further ageing.

Tempranillo

Hand crafted from vines planted in 2000 at the Markeas family vineyards, which are surrounded by Mallee country. The yields have been kept low for this interesting new varietal to ensure its character is fully expressed. Purple in colour with a violet hue, the nose has hints of wild berries and plums. The full flavoured palate offers earthy and dark cherry characters, which are balanced with 12 months of American oak maturation. The fine velvety tannins lead to a pleasant soft finish. This is a medium-bodied wine that is great drinking now and is an ideal accompaniment to pork and game dishes.

Chardonnay

Hand crafted from vines planted in 1978 at the Markeas family vineyards, which are surrounded by Mallee country. Golden straw in colour with green tinges, the nose offers a complex of ripe peaches and tropical fruit. The fresh palate has an abundance of zingy fruit with subtle French Oak that leads to a crisp-soft finish. This is a great drinking wine and is an excellent accompaniment to chicken and seafood on the BBQ.

Riesling

Hand crafted from vines planted in 2001 at the Markeas family vineyards, which are surrounded by Mallee country. Straw yellow in colour with green tinges, the nose offers an assortment of floral and fragrant flavours. The palate is crisp and savoury, balanced with a soft fruity finish. This is a refreshing drinking wine and is a delicious accompaniment to seafood and white meats.
