Oakland’s Prima Materia Winery Receives Slow Wine Award

03/01/2020

This February will make the 10th edition of Italy’s famed Slow Wine Guide and its domestic branch Slow Wine USA. The guide features a small percentage of West Coast wineries that meet the editor's standards for sustainable vineyard practices, respect for tradition, and a unique soul or voice.

Oakland, California’s Prima Materia Vineyard & Winery was honored to be included with other notable California winegrape growers such as Matthiason Wines, Grgich Hills, and Larkmead. In addition, Prima Materia’s estate-bottled Sangiovese was also awarded the “Everyday Wine Prize.” A unique combination of five different Sangiovese biotypes, including some of the only Biondi Santi clone grown in California, and Prugnolo Gentile, the bottling invokes Chianti Classico as a guiding light rather than Brunello.

The 2020 Slow Wine Guide will also include tasting notes for Prima Materia’s popular Barbera and Aglianico bottlings.

Prima Materia Vineyard & Winery grows its own grapes in the Kelsey Bench AVA of Lake County without pesticides or herbicides at 1500′ elevation in red volcanic Forbesville soil. Former chef and winemaker/owner Pietro Buttitta planted most of these grapes himself and has worked the vineyard for the last 11 years.

Prima Materia’s tasting room is located in the Temescal Alleys at 49th and Telegraph in Oakland, just behind Pizzaiolo and Doña Tomås. The wines have always been handled minimally, unfined, unfiltered, and focused on finding an articulate Lake County voice with a distinctly Old World finish and feel through bottom-up farming and winery practices.

Prima Materia is represented by Authentic Wine Selections in California.
