One of America’s leading fine wine retailers, Zachy’s, is expanding its base of operations from New York State to Washington, D.C. After 73 years serving customers from its headquarters and retail store location in Westchester, New York Zachy’s is now opening a massive, 20,000-square foot retail, wine storage and auction facility in Washington’s Northeast District. The two-story facility will contain a showroom, event space and a fully refrigerated, temperature-controlled retail and storage warehouse.

The decision to expand to Washington, D.C. was largely based on increasing call volume and Internet traffic from the nation’s capital. It was simply time to create a physical storefront presence to keep up with all this demand from the region. Instead of shipping to customers from New York, it’s now possible for customers to stop by and pick up orders - or to sign up for upcoming auction events.

"When looking at prospective spaces, we quickly discovered D.C.'s up-and-coming Northeast District," said Zachys President Jeff Zacharia. "We've seen an increase in our online and phone traffic stemming from the D.C. area; showing us there is a demand for a premium wine retailer and auction house in the market. We look forward to providing a white glove experience for our current clients and those new to the brand."

Starting in the Fall, the emphasis will be on creating a premium, one-of-a-kind experience that includes educational wine seminars, tastings and auctions. To educate customers about upcoming auction events, the company plans to host bidding parties and auction simulcasts.

There will also be a side to Zachy’s that retail customers won’t necessarily see, and that’s the full wine storage facility that will also come to Washington, D.C. This facility will operate under the name Zachys Storage D.C.

"Fine wine is an investment that deserves to be protected. We are confident our secure, state-of-the-art refrigerated facility is unlike most others. Collectors can be assured their wines are being stored properly and safely as they reach their optimum drinking potential," states Zacharia.

Zachys has called Westchester, New York, home for 73 years. The company currently operates a 45,000-square-foot storage facility in White Plains and a 4,000-square-foot storefront in Scarsdale, which jointly holds over 4,000 selections of fine wine and craft spirits. In addition to New York, Zachys has an independent company in Hong Kong, and staff in Beijing and Paris.

As a result, the new Washington, D.C. facility will represent a significant expansion for the company. The new 20,000-square foot facility represents a nearly 40 percent addition to the total size of the company’s nearly 50,000-square foot New York operations.

Without a doubt, wine drinkers in the nation’s capital will now have an impressive new destination for buying, collecting and consigning fine wines. It will be interesting to see if young millennial wine drinkers, used to consuming wines out of not just bottles but also boxes and cans, will also come to view Zachy’s as a preferred destination to learn about buying and collecting wines from all over the world.
