Local wines honored in Monticello Cup competition

Cardinal Point Vineyard has taken home the Monticello Cup for its 2014 Union.
The wine received one of 14 gold medals presented Thursday night at the Jefferson Theater. Another 30 silver medals and 15 bronze medals were awarded to wines from the Monticello American Viticultural Area.
Joining Cardinal Point’s 2014 Union in the top three red wines were Michael Shaps Wineworks’ 2014 Meritage and Pollak Vineyards’ 2014 Cabernet Franc Reserve. The top three white wines were First Colony Winery’s 2015 Viognier, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards’ 2015 Chardonnay Reserve and Stinson Vineyards’ 2014 Petit Manseng.

More than 30 Monticello AVA wineries were represented. In all wines, at least 85 percent of the fruit used came from vineyards in the Monticello AVA.
The awards presentation kicked off the Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival, which runs through Saturday.
