Lidl UK has reported a 50% spike in sales of rosé ahead of this weekend’s National Rosé Day.

The supermarket also said the warm weather in May led to a 15% rise in sales month-on-month, from April 2017 to May 2017, while year-on-year (from May 2016 to May 2017) sales rosé 50% for all of its rosé wines, European and New World combined.

Its own Lidl Cimarosa lines saw sales increase by 25% year-on-year, following a brand refresh. This includes its popular Cimarosa Zinfandel Rosé from California, which is priced at just £4.19.

Lidl’s core and current Wine Cellar ranges comprise 12 different rosé wine, and the retailer has promised more will join this summer.

The retailer also plans to tap into the continued interest in rosé wines from Provence; exports of Provence rose reportedly increased by 21% last year in volume and the UK is now Provence’s second largest market in volume for rosé wine.

To tap into this growth, Lidl UK has launched a new Cotes de Provence wine, which will join its core range from the end of July, priced at £5.99. The wine is made from Cinsault and Grenache.

Lidl’s wine consultant, Richard Bampfield MW, said: “The alcohol content of rosé wine can be much lower, from 10.5% abv, which makes for lighter summer drinking than the heavier abv’s found in other styles.
