La Tenuta Il Poggione Introduces a Spumante Metodo Classico Rose Made with Sangiovese

The Spumante Marchesa Clementina Metodo Classico Rosé – Pas Dosé is entirely produced in Montalcino by Tenuta Il Poggione with 100% Sangiovese grapes.

27/03/2018

Tenuta Il Poggione has launched a new wine, Marchesa Clementina, on the market. It is a sparkling wine Metodo Classico rosé, pas dosé, produced with 100% Sangiovese entirely produced in the cellars of the estate in Sant’ Angelo in Colle.

The name Marchesa Clementina is a tribute to the grandmother of the owners of the winery, Leopoldo, and Livia Franceschi. Always a lover of great Champagne, her taste has inspired this Metodo Classico.

“As my grandmother Clementina, I have always appreciated the great French Champagnes” – says Leopoldo Franceschi, co-owner of the Tenuta Il Poggione – “and I wanted to bet on our Sangiovese di Montalcino, known and appreciated for the production of Tuscan red wines, but little used for sparkling wines. In addition, I was, and I am convinced that a zero dosage shows at its best the aromatic and freshness characteristics of Sangiovese from Montalcino.”

For the production of this wine, the bunches of Sangiovese grapes were picked by hand in crates and softly pressed. This was the only moment in which the must have been in contact with the skins.

After fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, the bases were selected and the tirage took place. Since then, the wine has spent more than 24 months in contact with yeasts, at constant temperature and humidity, at the winery’s ancient cellar in Sant’Angelo in Colle. In the end, after the disgorging, the bottles rested for another two months. The liqueur used is free of added sugars (pas dosé): we came up with this “formula” after numerous tasting sessions, aimed at finding the best balance between purity and expressiveness. Therefore, the choice of making a pas dosé wine is not the result of the current trends, but rather from the natural qualities of the wine, which does not need any form of “makeup”.

Technical information
Grapes: 100% Sangiovese grown in Montalcino
Contact with the yeasts: at least 24 months
Dosage: Pas dosé

Tasting notes: elegant and fresh on the nose, with notes of small red berries, enriched by a hint of citrus and a certain fatness in the back. On the palate, the sensation of freshness is exalted. The wine very clean and dry, but never such as to betray the lack of dosage. Overflowing and persistent finish, with notes of citrus.

Food pairing: very versatile, it pairs well with smoked salmon, cold cuts, and fresh cheeses. The pairing with the traditional Tuscan main course is not to be underestimated.

Il Poggione is one of the historical wineries in Montalcino. Founded at the end of 1800 by the Franceschi Family, it was one of the first to make Brunello di Montalcino famous in Italy and in the world. Today the owners are Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi.
