They call it collision architecture, a boutique winery in Marlborough wrapped around an 1850s-style settler's hut conceived by the art director of The Hobbit trilogy.

The new Jackson Estate winery and cellar door, on Jacksons Rd, had its official opening on Friday after years of planning and nine months of construction.

The concept was developed by Brian Massey, the art director of The Hobbit trilogy, to reflect the Jackson Estate ethos of being modern pioneers of the wine industry.

The corrugated iron used to build the chimney of the settler's hut was sourced from an old shed on the property.

Director Jeff Hart said the company, which was established in 1988, wanted a unique building that would bring together its operations and become a drawcard for visitors.

"It's us putting confidence and faith in the industry and being serious about taking this up another level."

The 1850s-style hut, which housed the cellar door, was made using materials and techniques to create a rustic front which opened into a spacious, modern interior.

The timber for the porch was taken from an old railway bridge in Greymouth; the cedar shingles on the roof were treated with vinegar and other ingredients to make them appear aged.
