Pictou County distillery wins top honours at trade competition

A Pictou County gin has won top honors from the American Distilling Institute.

The Nova Scotia Spirit Company’s “Willing to Learn Gin” won a double gold medal in the International Classic Grain-to-Glass category at the American Distilling Institute’s 2017 craft spirits conference in Baltimore earlier this month.

“Willing to Learn Gin” was also named best in category for International Classic Rectified Gin. The company also took home a silver medal with Blue Lobster and a bronze medal with Solera Rum in their first year entering their spirits for judging at the ADI’s competition.

Evan MacEachern, who owns the business, which is currently based out of Trenton, said they had gone down to the trade show last year and checked out the event. It was then they learned about this competition and decided to enter.

After the judging, he said he had some indication they had done well, but he didn’t realize just how well.

“They kind of hinted we had won one of the major awards, but they didn’t tell us which one.”

He said he it was awesome to hear it was the top award, especially considering it is such a reputable competition that draws the top owners in the gin realm.

Overall attending the event is a great experience, he said.

“It’s such a great networking event. Everyone is very passionate about spirits and spirit production.”

There were about 1,800 people at the event.

“Everywhere you went in town you ran into somebody you recognized from the show,” he said.

Nova Scotia Spirit Co. is currently preparing to expand into a new location at the former Scotsburn Dairy building in Stellarton.
