Glasgow distillery scoops gold at Scottish gin awards

The Glasgow Distillery Company won two categories, including best specialty gin

19/09/2017

The Glasgow Distillery Company is taking home double gold after the first-ever Scottish Gin Awards.

Established distilleries mixed with craft operations, who came together to celebrate the innovation and continuing excellence in the Scottish Gin market.

Fighting off fierce competition from the likes of Eden Mill, Balmenach Distillery (makers of Caorunn) and Isle of Harris, Makar Gin came away with two GOLD AWARDS, the highest honour in any category, naming Makar Oak Aged Gin as the best-aged Gin in Scotland and Makar Old Tom Gin as the best specialty gin in Scotland.

Our Makar Oak Aged Gin won the Gold Award for Best Cask Gin of the Year fighting off competition from Arbikie, Eden Mill, and Pickering’s Gin.

Winning Speciality Gin of the Year was our Makar Old Tom Gin, a delicacy which has been sweetened with honey, almonds, and beeswax.

Our distillery was also a finalist for the highest prize of the evening; Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year.

Speaking on the success of the awards was Mike Hayward, our co-founder and the original recipe holder for Makar Gin:

“We are delighted that the Makar Gin range has continued to be so popular and garner such interest from consumers as well as such acclamation by the industry. Makar Gin has grown massively year-on-year from when we first launched in 2015.

“2017 has been a massively successful year for The Glasgow Distillery so far, giving us a great platform to build on for 2018 where we will be developing our Makar Gin range further and releasing our first single-malt whiskey. Thank you to The Scottish Gin Society for sponsoring the headline award and to the Scottish Gin Awards for hosting this brilliant evening and celebrating the best of Scottish Gin.”
