Fort Worth Distillery Open, Crafting Vodka from Texas Black-Eyed Peas
BlackEyed Distilling Co. launched March 4 with a grand opening event featuring craft cocktails and tastings of BLK EYE Vodka, the first vodka crafted by hand from black-eyed peas.
Distilled in a historic firehouse in Fort Worth, Texas, BLK EYE Vodka started as a bold vision during challenging times for a family-owned black-eyed pea farm in Muleshoe, Texas.
Years of drought and poor crop yields took their toll on master distiller Trey Nickels, who worked on his family’s land. The circumstances inspired a bold idea – distilling vodka from black-eyed peas. The result is an ultra premium, uncommonly smooth vodka with a clean, subtle taste ideal for mixing or sipping. Amino acids found in the black-eyed peas contribute to a higher-quality spirit.
All ingredients are sourced from Texas, and that includes the artwork on the limited-edition bottle. The debut bottle features the work of Fort Worth landscape artist Pat Gabriel, who gives a nod to the signature ingredient with his multimedia illustration of sunflowers growing in a field of black-eyed peas. The BLK EYE brand will continue to evolve as it commissions other local artists to share what it means to be a true Texas original.
BLK EYE Vodka is available in select stores and at the distillery, which is open to the public for tastings, tours and special events. A tasting room on the second floor of the distillery offers BLK EYE Vodka and the distillery-exclusive small-batch spirits as cocktails or by the bottle.
