We are excited to announce the opening of Brassivoire, our brand new brewery in Côte d'Ivoire, together with our partner CFAO. HEINEKEN invested EUR 150 million in this state-of-the-art brewery. It was built in just 13 months – a record for HEINEKEN – and is located in Anyama, 24 kilometres to the north of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire’s economic capital.

More than 500 people joined us at the official ceremony today to celebrate the opening of our new brewery, including the Vice-President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Daniel Kablan Duncan, the Prime Minister, His Excellency Mr. Amadou Gon Coulibaly and the Minister of Industry and Mines, Mr. Jean-Claude Brou, as well as senior representatives of the two partner companies.

HEINEKEN was represented by Mrs. Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken and Mr. Michel de Carvalho, Executive Board members of Heineken Holding N.V., as well as by the Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Heineken N.V., Mr. Jean-François van Boxmeer, and Mr. Roland Pirmez, President Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe. CFAO was represented by Mr. Richard Bielle, Chairman, and CEO, and Mr. Jun Karube, President and CEO of the Toyota Tsusho Corporation, a shareholder in CFAO. Brassivoire was represented by its General Manager, Mr. Alexander Koch. Other guests included our employees, partners, suppliers, ambassadors and the local community.

Africa’s fastest growing economy

Côte d'Ivoire is Africa’s fastest growing economy. With a fast growing population and emerging middle class, its economy has been expanding rapidly in recent years, averaging an impressive 8% GDP growth.

The Ivorian beer market presents a promising opportunity for HEINEKEN. It is currently relatively underdeveloped with consumption per capita at 11.8 litre, compared to 36 litre in Cameroon, for instance. Overall beer consumption is expected to grow by 6.7% per year until 2020, reaching a total beer market of nearly 3.2 million hectolitres by 2020.

Ivoire: Côte d'Ivoire’s flagship brand

Brassivoire has the capacity to produce up to 1.6 million hectolitre of beer per year whilst using modern technologies that will limit water and energy consumption. It will initially focus on brewing Ivoire, our flagship brand in the country.

Ivoire is a mainstream beer brand designed to capture and represent the country’s modern, creative and innovative spirit. Local demand for Ivoire has been steadily increasing since we started production in November last year.

Ivoire is now available across the whole country and demand is rapidly growing. Ivoire has been so successful that the new brewery has already reached full capacity based on the first stage of investment. In 2017, we will invest in installing a second production line to ensure we can continue to meet and stimulate demand. Next to that, Brassivoire imports Heineken® and Desperados to Côte d'Ivoire to offer consumers these premium brands alongside Ivoire.
