2 Brothers Brewery beat out thousands of competitors to claim two major brewing trophies at the Australian International Beer Awards.

In just its 10th year of operation and with only 10 staff, the family owned business proved quality is more important than quantity.

2 Brothers Brewery was awarded Best Australian Style Pale Ale for their “Pay Day Pale Ale” and Best Reduced or Low Alcohol Beer for their draught “Happiness”.

The team was also awarded three gold medals for Pay Day Pale Ale, Happiness, and Grizz an American Style Amber Ale — as well as an additional two silvers and six bronze medals for a total of 13 awards at the show.

Owners and brothers Andrew and Dave Ong started the Moorabbin-based brewery after they both returned from living in the US and wanted to try something different.

Andrew sold Dave on the idea by explaining the pair would earn enough money to only have to work three days a week and spend their spare time playing golf — but things didn’t work out that way.

“It’s a lot more intense work than I originally suggested but we are producing terrific beer and we are really pleased with how we stack up against the competition,” Andrew said.

“Pale Ale is the second largest style of beer outside of domestic larger and there were a lot of big competitors so to win that was incredible.

“And generally it’s not easy to make a low alcohol beer taste good but ours is called Happiness and it’s a terrific beer — we always get a laugh when people ask for a pint of Happiness.”
