Estano Originale Estate

Family Business

About Estano Estano is the name of a vineyard and olive oil estate in Sicily. In 2022, our family, the Giesbers from Druten, acquired this estate. Under the Estano brand, we are now producing and selling wine and olive oil for the first time. However, the estate itself has a nearly 200-year history as a wine and olive oil producer. The previous owner, who was 81 years old, had no successors willing to take over, necessitating the sale.

Our wine is made from the Catarratto grape, an indigenous variety introduced to Sicily by the Greeks over 2,500 years ago.

Our website, Estano.nl, provides a clear view of the harvesting and production process. Due to years of neglect, the land's quality has ironically improved, although the quantity of produce has decreased. This aligns perfectly with our philosophy of prioritizing quality over quantity. The wine, made from the Catarratto grape, is already flavorful, but we see further potential for enhancement.

Traditional Winemaking

We exclusively cultivate the Catarratto grape, aiming to improve our wines each year without additives, thus embracing a completely organic approach. We handpick the grapes, and the harvest is processed into juice on the same day. The flavor of the unoaked variant is fruity with notes of pear and a slight bitterness, making it perfect for summer terraces. It pairs excellently with fish, seafood, white meats, grilled vegetables, and soft cheeses.

The oak-aged variants have a fruit-forward taste with a subtle bitterness, full-bodied and balanced, well-suited to pair with shellfish, game, red meats, and robust cheeses.

2023

Wood-matured White Catarratto

Flavor profile

Ripe yellow apples, honey and dried apricots with subtle almond notes.

Refinement

This wine matures for 4 to 8 months in two different types of French barriques from Vicard: Acacia and Oak. The acacia wood gives our wine structure and body, softens the perception of tannin and gives the wine hints of vanilla and toast associated with the wood. Maturing in oak gives our wine “robustness” with hints of hazelnut and smoky aromas; it is aged for a slightly shorter time than in acacia barrels, so that the flavour of the wood does not dominate that of the wine.

Wine & Food

Shellfish, game, red meat, mature cheeses and rich sauces.
