We passionately grow Tempranillo, Albarino, Syrah, Merlot, Dolcetto, Malbec, Grenache, and other varietals carefully matched to our unique microclimate. The estate fruit is hand picked when optimally ripe and gently fermented and processed in a gravity flow winery to preserve quality. The crisp, fresh varietal character of our white wine is a product of our vineyard practices and minimal handling wine-making philosophy. Application of these same principles to red wine production, with additional cellaring in oak barrels, further enhance flavor and stabilize the wines. Consequently, our red wines are big and deeply colored with intense aromas and flavors that have ample structure and tannin for aging. The final products are balanced wines with distinctive varietal character. Our objective is to produce wines that are a statement of the harmony between the grape variety and terroir. We encourage you to visit our Vine & Wine Center and taste our wines to fully appreciate our passion.
Abacela epitomizes adventurousness, entrepreneurism, research, hard work and a dash of luck. The word “abacelar” originated from the western Latin spoken in the Iberian Peninsula and pre-dates modern Castilian Spanish. Today in Spain the word is still used only in the western provinces, especially Galicia and in neighboring Portugal. Its third-person conjugation “abacela” means “he/she/they plant a vine”. It was too fine a gift to ignore. In 1994, after an international search the Joneses decided this interesting word so elegantly encapsulated their project that they trademarked Abacela and registered it in Oregon as their business name although it would be three years before they would produce America’s first varietal Tempranillo.
