Shetland Distillery releases blended Scotch whisky

The Shetland Distillery Company, the UK’s most northerly distillery, has launched a blended Scotch whisky, which has been partly matured on the Scottish island.

The expression, called Shetland Reel Finished in Shetland Blended Malt, is the distillery’s first whisky partly matured in Shetland. It has spent six months in ex-oloroso Sherry casks at the distillery in Unst, one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands.

The distillery’s directors are focussed on raising funds to build Shetland’s first malt whisky distillery to meet “demand for Shetland blended malt”.

Shetland Distillery produces a range of gins as well as blended malt whisky under the Shetland Reel brand.

“Each batch of our blended malt is prepared from a small number of carefully selected casks of single malt Scotch whisky to create an exceptional whisky that is inspired by our distillery location in Unst, Shetland,” said co-owner and director Stuart Nickerson.

“It is 100% malt whisky, and with HMRC [Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs] permission to ‘finish’ at the distillery for up to six months, we decided not only to finish it on Shetland but to do so in ex-oloroso Sherry casks to give the whisky another added layer of complexity, flavour and sweetness.”

The Finished in Shetland Blended Malt will be available to buy online at shetlandreel.com and at the Shetland Arts and Crafts Fair tomorrow (8 November).
