Good fortune permeates our lives in multiple ways, every day. It is not happenstance. Good fortune occurs when opportunity meets preparation.

The name JiuJiu captures the spirit of good fortune, borrowing from Eastern and Western traditions. The Chinese name JiuJiu (9 spirits) is a reference to Pai gow/Pai jiu, an ancient Chinese game of luck now known as Baccarat. Nine is the winning number in Baccarat. To be successful in Baccarat, as in life, one needs a little good fortune. Every bottle of JiuJiu also comes with a custom deck of Baccarat cards so you can try your luck. The Mandarin pronunciation of JiuJiu is a homophone for a “long-lasting, healthy and prosperous life.” We want people who drink JiuJiu to have lucky, long lasting, prosperous healthy lives. One of the unique elements in JiuJiu is the edible 22.5-carat gold leaf cut into tiny 8s and 9s. These numbers inspire good fortune, as does the name JiuJiu itself. In Chinese culture 9 is a homophone for “to have enough” and 8 is “to make money.” When you have 8s and 9s together it means ultimate good fortune. The edible gold leaf also harks back to days gone by when Golden Bay was a big gold mining area, where people came to try their luck and make their fortune.

The Label — Lucky Adventures Abroad and the Good Fortune of Returning Home

JiuJiu is an adventurous global traveler found in the finest restaurants, social clubs, and spirit shops around the world. JiuJiu is where the most fortunate people are. The label depicts JiuJiu’s international presence with a Monarch butterfly. The Monarch butterfly resides around the world and has been documented for flying over 4800 km. The ferns represent JiuJiu’s New Zealand heritage, paying homage to the unofficial national flag and world champion sports teams. When the indigenous Maori tribesmen would go out hunting, they would turn over the leaf’s silver underside reflecting the moonlight, illuminating the way back home.

We balanced style and utility to create JiuJiu’s custom bottle. For the aesthetic design, we balanced the principles of beauty, strength, and simplicity. The elegant contours of the bottle form a slightly triangular shape. A triangle is a strongest and simplest shape you can make with two lines. Just as it is beautiful, the bottle is functional and easy to use. We talked with many prominent bartenders testing out variations of the form. The resulting bottle is statuesque with a wider base that angles upward making it easy to hold no matter the size of your hands. JiuJiu is for those that who do not want to sacrifice form for function. As such, our bottle can be proudly displayed at home or given as a prized gift to an honored friend.
