Mr. Riggs Wine Co. was founded in 2001 by winemaker Ben Riggs, whose winemaking philosophy is to make unpretentious wines that express the essence of the vineyard and the regions terroir, in a style that Ben enjoys drinking; big, rich and complex, but also with finesses, texture and elegance. Ben sources regional parcels of fruit from McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills and the Coonawarra. Ben graduated from Roseworthy Agricultural College in Adelaide, and furthered his experience through vintages abroad in the Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Greece, Italy, and the South of France as well as Australia. Ben has logged a whopping 44 vintages in total. Over the years Ben has been mentored by some of Australia’s leading winemakers and industry legends, including John Glaetzer, Murray Tyrrell, Brian Croser, Tony Jordan and Greg Trott. Ben was Chief Winemaker at Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale from 1988 – 2001, he logged 14 vintages and saw the business grow significantly. Ben’s wines have pleased many palates over the years including those of judges, winning 100 trophies and titles. He has also been nominated for Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the Year in 2005 and 2013. In 2001 Mr. Riggs Wine Co. was founded where Ben turned the focus inwards and put his own name (and produce) in lights. Through Mr. Riggs Ben is able to create wines that pay homage to the vineyard and varietal in a style that he loves to drink.
