James Estate wines are built on a foundation of quality, experience and a sense of “place” that encapsulates the lifestyle and creative spirit of the Upper Hunter Valley. At James Estate, it really is all about the wine. Our grapes are 100% estate grown. This means every part of the process is in the hands of our highly experienced and innovative winemakers. James Estate spreads across multiple sites in the Hunter Valley – our Cellar Door and Guest House in beautiful Pokolbin and Winery & Vineyard in Baerami, with plantings dating back to 1968. There are 86 hectares “Under Vine” with 12 different varietals of grape. At James Estate we know history and experience are important, but innovation is critical. Watch this space as we build on our foundation of experience and create sophisticated, contemporary, clever and elegant wines.
James Estates' historical home is nestled into a pocket of the Upper Hunter Valley, which is approximately 3.5hrs drive from Sydney, set on a rise that takes in jaw-dropping views of Goulburn River and Wollemi National Parks. This area has great natural beauty with fertile valleys nestled between sandstone cliffs and the valleys broaden into undulating hillsides and alluvial flats that provide the basis for premium viticulture. It’s a terrific setting for a winery and cellar door surrounded by the 200-plus acres of estate vineyards. James Estate and associated Vineyards are a combine footprint of more than 300 acres of vines spanning South East Australia. Varietals include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The ‘Hero’ Vineyard in the Upper Hunter Valley has its own unique ‘terroir’, the overall growing environment embracing both soil and climate. The region enjoys a cool Mediterranean climate which embraces long ripening periods and low rainfall which results in relatively low-moderate yielding and high quality fruit. Soil ranges from loamy sand top soils and clay subsoils ranging from red well-draining to heavy dark profile. Overall, excellent water holding capacity and great top soil drainage facilitates exceptional viticultural environments. Our vines are hand pruned yearly and each vine is pruned to achieve its optimal growing capabilities. The Winery at Baerami has its own bottling run where we can provide ‘private label’ or ‘Buyer’s own Brand’ which give the customer brand-ownership and exclusivity over the product. The James Estate Team can manage the entire process for you from wine production including wine making, bottling, labeling and packaging to container packing and logistics.
