Description
The cool conditions during ripening, derived from the South Atlantic Ocean, makes this not only a spectacularly beautiful site but also ideal for noble varietals such as Pinotage. Picked at optimal ripeness, minimum interference by the winemaker gave the wine the opportunity to reflect its terroir in a true and honest way. The 2021 – 2022 growing season will be recorded as having one of the longest periods between berry setting and harvest. The cool and wet winter months allowed a deep dormancy phase and resulted in higher yields. It was followed by an unusually wet spring, leaving the berries more time to ripen up. Summer only really started in January and brought us warm and dry conditions. This was perfect to allow healthy ripening, but it also resulted in a lower acid vintage. To mitigate this, certain blocks were picked earlier as to keep natural acidity in the wines. All in all an excellent growing year, showing a beautiful character and flavour in the grapes.

About this company
Hasher Family Estate is a family-owned farm in South Africa’s sought after Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Founded by the Herten-Haspeslagh family, the farm represents the coming together of centuries of European farming heritage with a lifelong passion for Africa. Run by a young and passionate team, the farm proudly produces exceptional wines that celebrate the cool maritime climate and unique soil the area has become known for. Planted on decomposed granite and clay soils, our vineyards benefit from the cooling influence of the South Atlantic Ocean, barely 5 kilometers away. We want the character of our grapes to tell the story of our terroir and therefore believe in growing only the cultivars that truly flourish in the area, resulting in a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We’ve also introduced regenerative agriculture principles and winter pruning techniques to further improve the quality of the fruit. This year, we’ve officially moved away from chemical fertilizers and herbicides.
