Sheetz Brews up Latest Limited-Edition Beer Made with Blueberry Muffins

Sheetz as a pit stop for gas, lottery tickets, and subs, it has also developed a following for beer

While most of us know Sheetz as a pit stop for gas, lottery tickets, and subs, it has also developed a following for beer.

After all, the Altoona-based company was one of the key players in the movement to “Free My Beer,” opening beer sales at grocery and convenience stores in Pennsylvania.

Now Sheetz is not only selling beer, but it’s also making beer. Later this week it will release a limited-edition brew, Project Brewberry Muffinz.

“We decided to do this because we care about our customers,” said Ryan Sheetz, assistant vice president of brand strategies for Sheetz. “They drive us to do what we do. They are our inspiration.”

As the name implies, the light-bodied blonde ale is brewed with Shweetz blueberry muffins – the same baked goods customers snap-on trips to the convenience stores along with coffee, candy bars, and potato chips. The beer is brewed by Evil Genius Beer Company in Philadelphia.

Evil Genius co-founder Trevor Hayward called Project Brewberry a light crisp beer with hints of blueberry. After talking with Sheetz, he said they decided to use “something intrinsically Sheetz.”

The brewery is known for its beers made with “very silly names for very serious beer drinkers.” The labels on Brewberry Muffinz depict a mad scientist and were created by York artist Zach Beard, aka Rupert Beard.

Project Brewberry will be available while supplies last at 99 Sheetz stores throughout the state starting at 4 p.m. Aug. 29. If you want to chase down a four-pack of cans, priced at $7.99 it’s a good idea to act quickly.

The last time Sheetz released a limited-edition beer - Project Coffee Hopz - in May, some stores witnessed lines out the door. That beer was made by Rusty Rail Brewing Company in Mifflinburg using Sheetz Brothers Sumatra coffee beans. It was available at 55 Sheetz stores and sold out within three weeks.
