The Islander Estate Vineyards was established by world renowned Bordeaux Winemaker, Jacques Lurton. Since his first Australian vintage in 1984, Jacques held the dream of having his own Australian vineyard and winery. After falling in love with Kangaroo Island’s natural beauty on his first visit to the island in 1997, he followed up by planting The Islander Estate Vineyards in 2000. Kangaroo Island’s maritime climate is ideal for a premium quality vineyard. The ample sunshine is cooled by constant gentle breezes, which allow for a long, slow ripening period; perfect for creating great complexity of flavour in the grapes Since our first vintage, The Islander Estate Vineyards has received widespread acclaim. Wine critic, James Halliday has awarded the winery 5 Red Stars and consistently rates the wines with outstanding scores across the board. Our 11ha vineyard is located in the centre of Kangaroo Island. The Estate’s north-facing slopes & friable soil provide us near perfect, cool climate growing conditions. Jacques planted grape varieties like Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Semillon, which are well suited to our terrior and have proven to produce premium, elegant style wines with great balance, natural acidity and long clean finishes. Our wines are all vinified on site, at our modern 70 tonne winery, with much of the equipment having come from France. This includes our large concrete fermentation tanks and a traditional basket press. The wines are then aged in our rustic barrel cellar for between 2-3 years in 630L French Oak Demi-Muid, before being bottled and released to the market. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
