Access to smaller estate wines from British Columbia has always been a challenge for Ontario wine enthusiasts. But not anymore. Recently, Alex Pyne and Jamie Crain founded in Terroir Wine + Spirits in Toronto to import hard-to-find, small yield, premium B.C. wines to Ontario. And last month, they conducted a special portfolio tasting for members of the Wine Writers’ Circle of Canada. Terroir’s list of producers is lengthy and deep. They represent 35 British Columbia wineries as well as a handful of California, Oregon and Washington producers. Of the 40 B.C. wines brought in for this tasting, most were from the Okanagan Valley, several hailed from the Fraser Valley and one came from the Saanich Peninsula at the southeastern-most tip of Vancouver Island. Most have never appeared in Ontario liquor stores because of our antiquated interprovincial trade barriers, although some are from well-established producers. In fact, some of the newer wineries have never shipped out of province. The portfolio includes some superb pinot noir and chardonnay from Meyer Family Vineyards, richly concentrated reds from Cassini Cellars including a superb Syrah, and tremendous bubblies from Summerhill Pyramid Winery. And all Terroir’s wines can be purchased for continuous stocking by private order while supplies last.
