Description

2015 INIZI HI-JUMP Red Blend, Mendocino County

Varietal- 40% Sangiovese, 30% Montepulciano, 20% Dolcetto 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

Vineyards- The HI-JUMP Red blend is sourced from three vineyards. The Dolcetto and Montepulciano come from the Foxhill Vineyard in the bench-lands of Mendocino County on the east side of Ukiah. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Gina’s Vineyard in the heart of Napa Valley, just outside of downtown St. Helena; and the Sangiovese comes from the Venturi Vineyard in the northern bench lands of Mendocino County.

Yield: 3-4tons/acre

Vintage- Warm weather in February and early March caused spring to come early in 2015, bud break occurred 2-3 weeks early. This was followed by below average temperatures in April and early May while vines were flowering causing poor fruit set. This was Nature’s way of naturally reducing yields on the North Coast after the three years of record harvests. A warm summer and light crop resulted in an early harvest and excellent quality.

Fermentation: This fruit was hand sorted and fermented in open top fermenters. While most of these lots were fermented separately, the Sangiovese and Cabernet were co-fermented. The goal was to achieve a soft and deep structure while avoiding the sometimes-harsh tannin of Sangiovese. All lots were allowed to ferment native both primary and MLF. There were no additions, fining, or filtering to this wine.

Harvest Dates: Early and late September 2015

Winemaker/Owners: John and Kirsti Harley    Viticulturist/Owners: A.J. and Jen Filipelli

Cooperage & Aging: The wine was aged in 90% neutral French Oak barrels and 10% 1-year-old French Oak Barrels for 10 months. The goal was a fresh low impact barrel program.

Bottling: August 2016

Production: 550 cases

Sensory Notes: This Hi-Jump Red showcases hints of Cocoa powder, Lavender, Anise and traces of Tobacco. The tannin is soft and approachable yet subsists enough to age and stand-alone. This wine manages to be the best of both the New and Old worlds. Harnessing a fresh and liveliness so commonly found in the New World while maintaining structure, depth and complexity that sometimes can only be found overseas.

About this company

INIZI means beginnings in Italian. The name INIZI came from our belief that a bottle of wine begins in the vineyard. We believe that wine should reflect not only the variety of the grape, but also the place it was grown, and the farming applied to the vineyard. As friends, husbands, wives and partners we are each passionate about different aspects of the wine business and have come together to bring you wines that showcase the vineyards and varieties in their purist form. Using as little new oak as possible, we rely on older barrels to age our wines. It is our pleasure to share high quality wines, from vineyard to bottle, to be enjoyed by friends and family for years to come.
