Description

Martinborough is home of the most mature Pinot noir producers in NZ although there are not many of us and our yield is naturally lower than some other regions due to the impact of the cold southerlies from the Antarctic – Martinborough only accounts for around 1% of NZ’s wine production.

Martinborough has one of longest ripening seasons in NZ enabling the fruit to hang until optimum The Pinot’s produced from this are tend to be built on a structure of tannin (opposed to acid) and hence tend to age very well. With age acid drops out where tannin doesn’t to the same extent hence good longevity. It is also the driest area in the North Island,  With indigenous yeast, fermented with 5% whole clusters
to 14.1% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 24% new 228 L casks.

This has a gently full and elegantly voluminous nose with softly packed aromas of ripe darkred and black berry and cherry fruit, unfolding subtle notes of violet florals and dark herbs from the core.  The aromatics are elegant and beautifully ethereal.

The Pencarrow wines are named after our local region.  The Pencarrow Lighthouse protects the southern most coastline of the North Island of New Zealand and the entrance to Wellington Harbour.  This was the first permanent lighthouse in New Zealand and the only Lighthouse ever to have been 'manned' by a woman.  In the 1800's, Mary Jane Bennet, raised her 5 children alone while maintaining the lighthouse on this cold desolate coastline. A true local heroine.

We have 6 different vineyards: Palliser/Clouston, Pencarrow, Pinnacles, Wharekauhau, Om Santi and the Winery block.  There are slight differences in soil types and climate between vineyards which helps to add complexity to our wines.

About this company

New Zealand’s smallest wine region, Martinborough is the place Palliser Estate calls home. Palliser Estate is situated in the picturesque boutique wine village that produces less than 1% of the nation’s wine, the region is constantly punching above its weight in quality, renowned for complex, elegant wines of rare depth. Palliser, one of the pioneers of the Martinborough region, has been making wines of true character since the first vintage back in 1989. The wines are all made from estate vineyards that stretch across 72 hectares of premium Martinborough river terrace, the best which are now under organic management. Across the entire range, Palliser produces wines of purity and true character that honour their heritage, their people and their place. Range of wines Palliser has two ranges: 1. The Palliser Estate range which is the premium brand sourced from our premium vineyards. 2. The Pencarrow range which was created to give people access to the delicious taste of Martinborough in an early drinking, approachable style, perfect as a \'by the glass\' pour. The Palliser Estate range is sold throughout the USA in the premium Total Wine and More stores. They are only available in this retail chain. We produce a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Pencarrow range. The Pencarrow wines have recently undergone a brand refresh and we are rolling out the \'new look\' label with the release of each of the 2018 vintage wines. We are looking for distribution of this Pencarrow range of wines through the USA and at this stage we will have the Pinot Gris available from 1 December, the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay available in early 2019, and the Pinot Noir available by the middle of 2019. The name Palliser and Pencarrow are taken from our local region and land. Palliser Bay and Cape Palliser are along the southern most coastline of the North Island of New Zealand a short distance from our vineyards and Pencarrow is the name of the Lighthouse that protects this coastline and the entry to Wellington Harbour at the end of this coast. Pencarrow Lighthouse was the first permanent lighthouse in New Zealand and for some time in the 1800\'s was run by the first and only ever Woman lighthouse keeper in New Zealand. Mary Jane Bennet not only \'\'manned\' the Pencarrow Lighthouse for 10 years, she did so while raising her 5 children following the drowning of her husband. Palliser Estate is proudly Kiwi owned, our first vintage was way back in 1989 when the New Zealand wine industry was young and we were amongst its fledgling pioneers; today our vineyards stretch across 72 hectares of premium Martinborough river terrace and our wines are sought after around the world — found in some of the most prestigious restaurants, hotels, bars and airlines on the planet.
