In the late nineties, when the opportunity arose to invest in the future of the young, independent Republic of Armenia, Eduardo began a string of strategic investments in the country that included development of the now-famous Zvartnots International Airport. A year later, he launched an ambitious agricultural venture, which later became Tierras de Armenia CSJC. Much like the airport we built in 2002, Tierrasde Armenia also functions as an international gateway - but this time, into the world of agriculture. In our name, we’ve chosen the word ‘Tierras’ because for us, this project is not just about cultivating land. We work to ensure the benefit of all organisms involved in the agricultural process--from the wine glass in your hand, right down to the soil under our feet, and all the people and places in between. Karas Wines is the first commercial endeavor of Tierras de Armenia. Named after the giant clay vessels used continuously in the region for winemaking since ancient times, Karas Wines represents a rebirth of regionalviticulture from the land where wine began. Located at analtitude of about 1100 meters above the sea level, the mineralrich, volcanic and basalt soil of the region provided the perfect climate for vines to grow. Our goal from the start has been to set a new standard for winemaking in Armenia and bring expertise back to the birthplace of wine—and that’s just what we’ve done. The combination of our know-how with Armenia’s gorgeous terroir has been a worthy pursuit.
