“The House of Peers” moniker refers to the senior chamber of the British Parliament, where the hereditary lords or “Peers” of the United Kingdom have come for centuries to decide upon the laws of the land. Around 100 years ago the House of Peers blended scotch whisky was first created, at the height of the Victorian whisky boom, specifically to appeal to the demanding taste requirements of these august and discerning gentlemen. It was believed that, expecting only the best, these Peers would appreciate richness of flavour and smoothness – qualities which are foremost in all of the House of Peers blends.

In the late 1940s when Frederick Laing moved from the shipping business into the whisky industry, he had the good fortune of being able to acquire the House of Peers brand name and original blend recipe from its then owner. Gently tweaking the recipe he improved it further still – building upon its smooth depth of flavour. Under his careful stewardship the brand enjoyed continued success in the important whisky markets of North, then South America – with the US, Mexico, Venezuela and Argentina being enthusiastic and loyal customers.

Now, nearly 70 years later the mantle has passed onto his son, who is the guardian of the blend recipe and has himself worked in the whisky industry for over 50 years. Master Blender, Mr Tom Aitken, formerly the Master Blender of the mighty John Dewar company until his retirement some years ago. Tom was persuaded him to re-enter the whisky industry, it was thought by many that he agreed because he relished the opportunity of working with the famed House of Peers blends.
