Scotsman-turned-Southlander Chris Montgomery is in the midst of his postgraduate diploma in business enterprise and is looking into Southland's craft beer industry because he believes there's much-untapped potential.

"There's change in the air," he said.

"Craft beer is a bit of a journey - once you go down that road, you don't come back."

As part of his research, he has merged his passion for beer with academics and is looking into Southland's craft beer industry and audience.

"It's very fun research," he said.

He had looked to Nelson as an example, where the craft beer industry had boomed in recent years.

"That was one of the things we paid attention to because they have a similar population," he said.

"If they can do it, why can't we."

Simply, Montgomery wanted to see more craft beer in Invercargill on tap.
