Local Winery Submits Petition To Create Upstate New York Wine Region

Many people buy wine based on the label, but that’s not helping area wineries.

Some Capital Region wineries are not located in one of New York`s four wine regions, which limits what can be written on the label. But now local vineyards are on their way to creating a designated wine region in Upstate New York called the Upper Hudson.

Andrew Weber owns Northern Cross Vineyard in Easton.

`The question we get asked most often is `where are your vines,` or `do you have vines,` he said. `And we can say, yeah, and you can look outside the window and see there`s two acres of them down there.`

But that wouldn’t be known just by looking at the label because Weber`s vineyard doesn`t fall into a federally designated wine region. Therefore, the bottle can only say it’s `bottled` at the vineyard, which doesn`t reflect the work that goes into it.

`There are plenty of folks who bring in grapes from other regions or concentrate from other regions and make wine here, but it`s not as authentic as some of the folks are looking for,` Weber said.

So to differentiate his vineyard from those, he submitted a petition to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to call for a 1,500 sq. mile wine region that’s already home to 16 wineries – and soon, there could be more.
