Port Perry brewery honoured with provincial, national beer awards

Old Flame Brewery's red, brunette and blond beers all recognized

Each of the Old Flame Brewery’s signature suds — blond, brunette, and red — were honored at this year’s provincial and national beer competitions.

The Old Flame brunette brand grabbed a gold medal in the North American Style Dark Lager category of the Canadian Brewing Awards and the Port Perry brewery’s red took bronze in the North American Style Amber Lager competition.

The Canadian Brewing Awards, which were handed out May 27, is Canada’s national competition for judging the quality of Canadian manufactured beer and ciders. A Canadian Brewing Award medal is a widely recognized symbol of Canadian brewing excellence.

As well, on April 27, Old Flame Brewery was awarded a silver medal at the Ontario Brewing Awards in the Standard Lager category. It marked the first time the blond brand was recognized with an award.

“We’re a little startup brewery in small-town Port Perry and now we have our third national award and second gold,” said the brewery’s Jack Doak.

Over the three years, the Perry Street brewery’s been open, the red has been recognized at either the national or provincial competitions, noted Doak.

“That shows the quality and consistency of our red,” he said.

The red also recently picked up a bronze medal in the Amber Lager category of the Australian International Brewing Awards.

“We now have national and international recognition as a quality craft brewery,” said Doak. “This essentially puts Old Flame Brewing Company and the town of Port Perry on the map across Canada. People are starting to recognize the brand now. We’re a major tourism driver that are exposing people to our wonderful town.”

The Port Perry brewery, which will mark its third anniversary June 10, has submitted an application to Scugog as part of its plan to expand its operation by 900 square feet. That extra space, on the southeastern side of the former LCBO building, will allow for more tanks to increase production, a larger canning line and a courtyard outside.
