The "forgotten" borough is home to the Flagship Brewing Co. And Staten Islanders can now precede that business moniker with the words "the award-winning."

The 3-year-old brewery took a gold medal back to Tompkinsville for its India Pale Ale (IPA). The honor was bestowed April 20 at the TAP New York Craft Beer & Food Festival at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in the Catskills.

Flagship brewmaster Patrick Morse said, "It's an honor not just to receive recognition for a beer we've worked so hard to make but to do so at TAP NY where you know there's a great IPA around every corner, that's a nice tip of a cap."

The IPA, introduced in the spring of 2015, features citrus flavor notes, specifically those of grapefruit, and mango. It is served at the brewery's taproom in Tompkinsville at 40 Minthorne St. and sold in bottled six-packs at select delis and markets across the Island.

"We are extremely proud to see Flagship IPA get recognized with a gold medal at TAP NY!" enthused Matt McGinley, a principal in the business. "Our team knows what a great and well-balanced beer Flagship IPA is, and it's always nice when others agree and recognizes your brewery's hard work. It's a great achievement for our Head Brewer Patrick Morse and team!"

The Staten Island crew has been lauded for their work in prior competitions, most recently as a recipient of Gold and Silver medals in the NYC International Beer Competition. However, the TAP prize is a great of nod recognition in the midst of formidable New York State breweries such as Brooklyn Beer, Keegan Ales of Kingston and Hudson Ale Works in Highland.

"We strive to make the best quality beer each and every day, but I won't lie, it is nice for the industry to recognize that," said Jay Sykes, a co-principal of Flagship.

He praised his team, calling out Morse in the collective effort of planning and execution.

"The beers really are an expression of who we are and what we have dedicated our lives to doing," Sykes said.
