Proprietors Karen Smith and Hal Roche have been financially maintaining Serpent Ridge Vineyard in rural Carroll County the past seven years through a combination of five-day-a-week tastings and occasional entertainment. It is a place where you go, order a glass of wine and maybe some cheese, and relax amid the tall trees and nearby vines.

But the tastings and entertainment disappeared in mid-March as states shut down because of an increase in coronavirus cases, leaving the two of them to just focus on moving as much wine as they could via curbside pickup. Those who did stop to pick up their wine order left, quickly.
