Grander rum and Café Marula liqueur launch in the UK

London-based spirits importer Gravity Drinks will distribute Grander 12-year-old and eight-year-old rums and Café Marula coffee liqueur in the UK.

Previously only available in the US, the new Bourbon-barrel aged Panamanian rums are produced by DeHart Spirits.

Bottled at 45% abv, Grander 8-Year-Old Rum is aged for a minimum of eight years in ex-Bourbon barrels. It is described as having notes of nutmeg, dried fruit with hints of Bourbon and sugar cane.

Grander 12-Year-Old Rum (45% abv) has been aged for a minimum of 12 years in ex-Bourbon barrels, some of which are Sherry-seasoned. The extra four years of maturation is said to deliver “unique nutty flavours of toasted almond and nutmeg”, with “more density and nuances” than the eight-year-old.

Grander Rum creator Dan DeHart said: “The UK market is ripe for such well-crafted aged rums, which sit comfortably next to the best whiskies.

“Many UK consumers tend to think of rums as overly sweetened or only meant for mixing, but Grander is ready to change this perception.”

Gravity Drinks managing director Matthew Maslin added: We’re very excited to be launching such a high-quality product as Grander into the UK.

“Grander’s all-natural ageing process, commitment to purity and strict no-additive policy are exactly what UK consumers are looking for in a rum today.”

In addition to Grander Rum, Gravity Drinks will exclusively launch Café Marula in the UK.

The expression is the first liqueur from Belgium-based Marula Gin and is made from marula fruit and Kenyan coffee beans.

According to the Antwerp-based distiller, when local wildlife gets a taste of marula, the fruit ferments inside them, resulting in “comically drunken behaviour”.

Marula teamed up with Brussels-based sustainable micro coffee brewery Or Coffee, which sourced the coffee beans for the liqueur,.

The coffee liqueur is described as having a “strong floral flavour and high acidity” from the coffee beans, along with the “tropical taste” of the marula fruit.

Maslin said: “With the sudden rise in popularity of the Espresso Martini, both UK consumers and on-trade experts are on the lookout for the best ingredients for their favourite pick-up.

“Café Marula’s all-natural ingredients and subtly-sweet tropical flavour bring something new and exciting to the category which promises to shake things up.”
