Duppy Share launches spiced rum in UK

The Duppy Share rum has released its first line extension in five years – a spiced variant made with pineapple, kola nut and Caribbean spices.

According to The Spirits Business, The Duppy Share was created from a blend of three-year-old Jamaican rum and five-year-old Barbados rum, which were aged in Bourbon barrels and then bottled in London.

The new Duppy Share Spiced was developed with Robin Honhold, former head of operations at Mr Lyan, which manages venues such as Lyaness and Cub in London. Honhold is also the co-founder of drinks innovation team A/O.

The Duppy Share founder George Frost said: “When making a rum it’s all about creating a great tasting liquid that stands out from the crowd. Spiced rum is booming in the UK, with sales topping 10 million bottles in 2019, and I saw a massive opportunity to create a spiced rum that focused on adding depth of flavour and complexity that consumers don’t usually get or expect from other spiced rums.

“Spiced rum has had a bad reputation in the past for being super sweet and packed so full of flavourings that you can’t even tell that it’s a rum. We wanted to forge a different path to advance the category and show consumers how good a spiced rum can be.”

The spiced variant is made with a base of aged rum from Jamaica’s Worthy Park and Barbados distillery Foursquare.

The 37.5% ABV expression has been created to be an “accessible, versatile craft rum with a blend of spices” that are designed to stand up in mixers such as ginger, soda and cola.

It is also said to offer the on-trade a “bold new flavour to create playful twists on classic cocktails including the Daiquiri” and comes in thinner bottles with a longer neck to make it easier for bartenders to use.

The rum is said to have notes of ginger, vanilla, clove and nutmeg, as well as “brightness from grapefruit, orange and basil”.
