New Barons Brewing Cooperative, Wisconsin’s first co-op brewery, has announced that it will be opening its first taproom in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood.

The building, located at 2018 S. 1st St., was previously home to Wood Violet Tap House, a taproom owned by Enlightened Brewing Co. Before that, Enlightened Brewing used the space for brewing before relocating to 2020 S. Allis St. It’s a space that will feel right at home for the new tenants — Enlightened Brewing had been allowing New Barons Brewing Cooperative to use one of the tanks at Wood Violet Tap House to brew its beer one batch at a time.

“We shopped a lot of spaces, some that were very similar in size, but when Enlightened offered that they wanted to get out of the lease here, we had already been brewing on this system for two years,” says CEO and Head Brewer John Degroote. “Brewing takes a lot of experience with using the equipment that you‘ve been using, so from a quality standpoint, from day one it’ll be the same.”
